Four new routes launched at Göteborg Landvetter

International air traffic at Göteborg Landvetter Airport continues to grow. In the past few days, four new European direct routes were launched, to Vienna, Gdansk, Budapest and today Katowice. Along with the new services, another four new direct routes were announced in the past month. In September, 521,000 international passengers flew to or from Göteborg Landvetter, which is a 3 per cent increase compared to last year.

On Sunday, October 27, the carrier Lauda Air started flying to Vienna, while Ryanair launched service to Gdansk, quickly followed by service to Budapest on October 29 and today October 30, Katowice. Recently announced routes include Turin and Grenoble with Norwegian Air Shuttle for the winter season, Berlin with Braathens Airways (BRA), and Hamburg with Eurowings, the latter two to launch in late March 2020.

The German market is important to western Sweden, and as many as six airlines serve Gothenburg: Czech Airlines and Eurowings to Hamburg, Lufthansa to Frankfurt and Munich, Lauda to Stuttgart, and easyjet and BRA to Berlin. Hamburg and Germany in general have become increasingly attractive in recent years. Passenger volume between Gothenburg and Hamburg has doubled since 2016, and interest continues to grow. Germany is the largest international market for departing passengers, with more than 30 per cent of them business travellers. For visitors arriving in the Gothenburg region counted in the number of guest-nights, Germany is the second largest market and one that has shown continued steady growth in 2019.

Ryanair is growing fastest at Göteborg Landvetter, and the Irish carrier continues to expand. Ryanair accounts for three of the routes launched during the week: Gdansk, Katowice and Budapest. Meanwhile, five existing routes have been converted into year-round traffic: Barcelona, Dublin, Manchester, Prague and Milan. Lauda is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ryanair. Including its two routes, the Ryanair Group now offers 22 international routes from Gothenburg, either year-round or seasonal.

Including this week’s launches, 17 new routes have started up from Göteborg Landvetter so far this year. For many years, Swedavia has carried out ambitious sustainability work. All ten of its airports shall have zero emissions of fossil carbon dioxide from their own operations by 2020. Swedavia also works actively to promote the industry’s transition to bio fuel and has the goal that five per cent of all fuel used to refuel aircraft at Swedish airports shall be fossil-free by 2025.
