Swedavia’s traffic statistics for August 2020: air travel decreased 83 per cent

During August, 650,000 passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, a decrease of 83 per cent compared to 3,700,000 passengers during the same month last year. The recovery in air traffic continued compared to the preceding months but slowed somewhat in late August due to decreased leisure travel. The market situation remains strongly affected by the global Covid-19 pandemic. 

Of the 650,000 passengers in August, 420,000 were international passengers, a decrease of 85 per cent compared to the same month last year. Domestic travel decreased to a lesser extent, falling 76 per cent in August. A total of 230,000 passengers flew domestically compared to 980,000 last year during the same month.

“Summing up the summer months the cautious recovery in air travel continued in August as countries eased travel restrictions enabling greater connectivity between countries. Although air travel continued to recover in August volumes remain at historically low levels due to of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia’s president and CEO.

“As autumn approaches the current industry view is that the aviation market recovery to pre-Covid levels will take several years. Near term the limited aviation market continues to be strongly affected by the pandemic with significantly lower air travel volumes and is expected to remain significantly affected for the rest of the year and as well as next year,” says Jonas Abrahamsson.

At Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden’s largest airport, air travel decreased 83 per cent to 418,000 passengers in August compared to the same month in 2019. At Göteborg Landvetter Airport, Sweden’s second largest, air travel also decreased 83 per cent to 104,000 passengers during the month. At Swedavia’s regional airports, passenger volumes decreased between 66 per cent and 93 per cent compared to figures for the same month last year.

For many years, Swedavia has carried out ambitious sustainability work. All ten of its airports shall have zero emissions of fossil carbon dioxide from their own operations by the end of 2020. Swedavia also works actively to promote the industry’s transition to sustainable aviation fuel and has the goal that five per cent of all fuel used to refuel aircraft at Swedish airports shall be fossil-free by 2025. Since 2016, Swedavia buys renewable aviation fuel equivalent to that used for the company’s business travel, about 450 tonnes of fuel each year.
