At a press event on 7 February at Swedavia’s and Sweden’s third largest airport, Malmö Airport, it was announced that Region Skåne will procure and introduce a public transport route to the airport through Skånetrafiken. Traffic for Skånetrafiken buses is planned to start in August 2026 with a bus line between Svedala and Malmö Airport. The investment will be an important complement to today’s airport buses and taxis and will strengthen the airport as an intermodal transport hub.
“The investment in strengthened public transport together with Skånetrafiken is a welcome addition for our commuters, as well as for our travelers. Malmö Airport is an important and major employer for the region and the improved accessibility means that we can increase our competitiveness through strengthened intermodality to and from the airport. Expanded public transport via the airport contributes to Swedavia’s ambitious sustainability goal of fossil-free domestic travel from door to door in 2030,” says Nils Funke, Airport Manager Malmö Airport at Swedavia.
The Skånetrafiken buses will be operated on a half-hour schedule, and travellers and commuters will have the opportunity to connect by train from Malmö, as well as by bus from Lund. It will also be possible to connect to traffic from Ystad and Trelleborg. Svedala will therefore be the node for public transport to and from Malmö Airport. This strengthened public transport solution will help both commuters and airport travelers and is a long-awaited addition to today’s commuting options.
“It is really wonderful that Region Skåne can continue to improve public transport for us Skåne residents. Now that we are introducing a public transport route to Malmö Airport, we can help strengthen the attractiveness and competitiveness of the airport and contribute to more sustainable travel to a workplace that currently generates a lot of car trips,” says Carina Zachau (M), chairperson of Region Skåne's public transport council.
Swedavia’s Airport, Malmö Airport, is Sweden’s third largest airport. The airport is a major employer in the region with over 1,000 employees and about 40 different companies with operations at the airport. Malmö Airport currently offers 19 destinations and over 905,000 travelers passed through the airport in 2024.
Swedavia is working to drive the aviation industry forward and to support the transition in the aviation industry. Our goal is to achieve fossil-free domestic air travel by 2030 and for all flights originating from Swedavia’s airports to be fossil-free by 2045. Malmö Airport is one of four Swedavia airports certified at the highest level in the world within the Airport Carbon Accreditation framework’s environmental and sustainability criteria. Green electricity is already used throughout the airport, while the back-up power and vehicle fleet are powered by electricity and HVO100, while fossil-free petrol and biogas are purchased for the airport’s operations.
