Year off to a record start at Swedavia’s airports

More and more Swedes are choosing to fly. During the first month of 2017, passenger volume was up a full 10 per cent at Swedavia’s airports. Both domestic and international traffic increased sharply compared to January 2016. A total of 2,854,000 passengers flew to or from one of Swedavia’s ten airports in Sweden. At Stockholm Arlanda Airport, international traffic increased a full 13 per cent in January.

A total of 2,854,000 passengers flew to or from one of Swedavia’s airports in January, which is a 10 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2016.

Nearly 1,846,000 passengers flew internationally in January, which was also a 10 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

January statistics for domestic traffic show an 8 per cent increase compared to January 2016. A total of 1,008,000 passengers flew domestically to or from Swedavia’s airports during the month.

“More and more people are choosing to fly to and from our airports, which shows how crucial air travel is for Sweden’s growth. When we look at passenger volume over the past twelve months, we are really close to the historic 40 million mark,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, president and CEO of Swedavia.

In the latest rolling 12-month period, the total number of passengers increased 5 per cent to 39,761,000. If this passenger growth continues, there are many indications Swedavia may surpass 40 million passengers in 2017. During this 12-month period, domestic traffic was up 4 per cent while international traffic was up 6 per cent.

The number of landings at Swedavia’s airports in January this year was 16,178, which is 5 per cent more than the same month last year.

For Swedavia’s two largest airports, travel in January set a new passenger record. More than 1,799,000 passengers flew to or from Stockholm Arlanda Airport, which is a 12 per cent increase at Sweden’s largest airport compared to January last year.

At Göteborg Landvetter Airport, 446,500 passengers were counted, the highest figure for January in the history of the airport. This is a 5 per cent increase over January last year.

Other substantial increases in passenger volume for January were seen at:

• Kiruna Airport, where total passenger volume was up 19 per cent (to 26,400)
• Ronneby Airport, where total passenger volume was up 17 per cent (to 17,300)
• Åre Östersund Airport, where total passenger volume was up 15 per cent (to 44,300)
• Visby Airport, where total passenger volume was up 12 per cent (to 24,300)
